TEAMS OF EXPERTS FROM MAGEN DAVID ADOM WILL TRAIN LOCALS TO CONDUCT INOCULATIONS FOR REFUGEES, WHICH WILL HELP IN STOPPING THE SPREAD OF THE EPIDEMIC.
Earthquake damage in Haiti includes the sanitation system- there is no sewage and there is a severe shortage of water. In tent camps in which thousands of refugees are presently concentrated, the fear exists of the outbreak of diseases due to poor hygiene and the absence of basic sanitary conditions.
Some 140,000 refugees will be treated within the framework of the emergency immunization program at the initiative of the Ministry of Health of Haiti, UNICEF and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
The International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) is the main partner implementing this program and intends to train designated local manpower in inoculating the population. The program is expected to last two weeks.
“ The program will be centralized at this time in Port- au -Prince because as of now the residents are at the highest risk of contracting diseases,” relates Ohad Shaked, paramedic from the team of MDA experts who are training locals to carry out immunization. “The IFRC plans to inoculate some 1,800 refugees on the first day of the program in the camp located on the old airport route “La Piste”, where 30,000 refugees are currently living. The patients will be vaccinated against measles as well as diphtheria and tetanus.
Over 12,000 people have already been treated within the framework of the program. On the average, some 1,300 people will be treated daily in the medical installations of the IFRC, which has the ability to treat some 340,000 people.
