Breach Birth in the Ambulance
Dorin was due to have her baby by caesarean section, but the baby couldn't wait!
Dorin Asweed (31) from Neot Golan was due to deliver her baby by caesarean section in Tzafon(Poriya) Hospital during the second week of January. On Thursday, 29th of December, she started feeling strong contractions while at home. "This is my third birth. The last time, I gave birth within 20 minutes of arriving on the delivery room, so this time we left home immediately. During the journey, I felt that the contractions were intensifying, and I realized that the delivery was imminent, and was worried that we wouldn't make in time to the delivery room. I asked my husband Netanel to call MDA, for them to help us get to hospital quickly," said Dorin.
A mobile intensive care unit (MICU) team arrived after a few minutes and quickly moved Dorin to the ambulance, with Netanel following in the car behind. Dorin told the team that the baby was breach, and that she's due to have a caesarean section in another week. MDA Paramedic Tal Tabachnik said: "From the very first moments, we kept Dr. Dima Choyon, the manager of the delivery unit, informed, and he was on the line with us throughout the journey to hospital. Since this was a breach birth that could be complex, our aim was to reach the delivery room as fast as possible. While on route, we realized that the delivery was progressing, and we stopped at the side of the road to deliver the baby."
Dr. Dima Choyon, Manager of the Delivery Unit in Tzafon(Poriya) Hospital, explained: "We received a report from an MDA team of a woman in labor with a breach baby, I understood that this would be a complex delivery, so we prepared for their arrival with an extended team, including an anesthesiologist, midwives, and doctors from the neonatal unit, in order to meet the woman in the delivery room. I was in phone contact with the MDA team the whole time. I guided them how to release the first arm and then the second, then the shoulders, and then how to carefully extract the head. Thankfully the delivery was successful, and both mother and daughter are in good condition."
Netanel, the father, summarized: "The paramedic indicated from the ambulance that everything was ok. I understood that Dorin had delivered the baby, and I breathed a sigh of relief. The truth is that we really didn't want to have a caesarean section, and it seems that the baby wanted a natural delivery too, so I'm pleased that the delivery went well, without the need for a caesarean section."
