Memories in MDA Stations
Hundreds of Magen David Adom staff and volunteers marked Yom Hashoah Vehagvura - Holocaust Remembrance Day - in stations across Israel
Magen David Adom stations across Israel welcomed Holocaust Survivors and their families, who presented their stories of survival through the darkest era of Jewish history. This is the second year that this has taken place in MDA, where the stations invite survivors and their families to "Memories on Station."
Hundreds of MDA EMTs, paramedics, support staff, youth volunteers, dispatch staff, blood services, and many others were privileged to hear from survivors such as Miriam Harel who survived the Lodz Ghetto and then Auschwitz, where she lost many members of her family.
In Jerusalem, those present heard about Motke Vizel, MDA's oldest volunteer who passed away just two weeks prior at the age of 94. He also survived Auschwitz, and was the chairperson of the Former Nazi Prisoners' Association in Jerusalem. In 2007 he was honored to light a ceremonial torch at the State Opening of Holocaust Memorial Day.
The family of Shai Sherzer who passed away in 2018, told his story of Romanian Jewry and the Holocaust era there to the MDA volunteers and staff in Tel Aviv.
"The memory of the Holocaust is something every person should hold," said MDA Director General Eli Bin. "There is a primary importance to hearing directly from the survivors, and the "Memories on Station" project allows us to bring together the generation of survivors that is disappearing, along with our staff and volunteers."
Events took place in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Kfar Sava, Holon, Ashdod, Kiryat Gat, Kiryat Motzkin, Yokneam, Ramat Gan, Hof HaCarmel among others.
