Shabbat of Terror in Jerusalem

30.01.2023 16:30

MDA EMTs and Paramedics risk their own lives as two terrorist attacks hit Jerusalem's peaceful Shabbat streets this weekend, leaving 7 people dead and 5 seriously injured

Magen David Adom teams responded to two terror attacks over Shabbat.

The first, on Friday night, hit the streets of Neve Yaakov, when a terrorist opened fire on civilians enjoying a Shabbat walk outside a local synagogue. Ten people were injured in the attack, 5 of them fatally on scene. Two patients were conveyed in critical condition undergoing resuscitation. They were declared dead in hospital. Three other victims who were in serious condition were treated and conveyed by MDA EMTs and paramedics to various Jerusalem hospitals.

Fadi Dekidek, a 20-year veteran paramedic of Magen David Adom, was the first paramedic on scene at the event. "It was a very serious terror attack. We saw a woman and four men lying in the road. They had gunshot wounds, and there were no signs of life. We treated five other victims who we conveyed to hospitals around Jerusalem."

Two of the patients were conveyed in critical condition while undergoing resuscitation attempts by MDA teams. Despite their efforts, and those of the hospital staff, these two died in hospital, bringing the total to seven people killed in this terror attack. Three further patients were treated and conveyed to hospital in serious condition.

The following morning, another shooting attack took place in Jerusalem, near the Old City in the area of Ir David. In this incident, a man, 47 years old, and his son, 23, were the victims, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The father was treated by MDA teams and conveyed to hospital in moderate to severe condition, and the son, a Magen David Adom volunteer himself, was seriously injured. MDA teams arrived on scene very quickly, with once again Paramedic Fadi Dekidek being the first on scene.

Magen David Adom teams, on medicycles, ambulances and mobile intensive care units were rapidly on scene in both incidents, helping to save the lives of those who they could, even while the gunfire was going on in the background.
