"The little girl asked me where they were going to live"

29.03.2026 15:48

On a night marked by chaos, destruction, and uncertainty, 21-year-old Magen David Adom volunteer Yehonatan Shem Tov stood on the frontlines of one of Tel Aviv’s most devastating missile strikes. As flames raged and buildings lay in ruins, Yehonatan worked tirelessly alongside emergency forces to save lives, embodying the resilience and humanity that define MDA responders. Amid the urgency and danger, it was a single, quiet interaction with a frightened child that captured the profound emotional weight of that night.

Yehonatan Shem Tov, a 21-year-old Magen David Adom (MDA) volunteer and First Responder in MDA's Medicycle Unit, responded on Saturday night (Feb 28, 2026) to provide first aid at the site of a fatal missile strike in Tel Aviv. Before him lay a scene of massive destruction, vehicles engulfed in flames and exploding, heavy smoke, and severely damaged buildings. Working alongside large-scale MDA forces, Yehonatan treated several casualties with varying degrees of injury, stopping hemorrhages, searching for signs of internal injuries, and even assisting in rescuing victims from the rubble, working shoulder-to-shoulder with Home Front Command, Police, and Fire & Rescue personnel.

While many moments from that night will stay with him, one in particular stands out: the moment he helped a mother and her children evacuate from one of the damaged buildings:

"I noticed a family leaving the building" said Yehonatan "A mother with two children, and another small girl, about five years old, being carried by a Home Front Command officer. I took the girl and quickly performed a medical assessment. She was holding a book, and I could feel that she trusted me; my Magen David Adom uniform seemed to calm her. Suddenly, she looked at me and asked where they were going to live. It was heartbreaking. I quickly composed myself, smiled, and told her that everything would be okay, that maybe they would even have a more beautiful house, and that the most important thing was that they were all together."
