Over the past year, Magen David Adom teams have been dedicated to saving lives in both routine and emergency situations. As the Jewish New Year approaches, the organization summarizes the past year and presents its key activities in numbers.

During the Hebrew year 5786, MDA celebrated 96 years of activity. According to the organization's data, over the past year, MDA EMTs and paramedics were dispatched to 1,911,412 incidents using thousands of mobile intensive care units (MICUs), ambulances, emergency motorcycles and rapid response vehicles throughout the country. On average, a call was received at MDA's 101 Emergency Call Center every 15.6 seconds, with an average response time of just two seconds or less.

The year in numbers:

Approximately 39,200 volunteers, staff, National and Civilian Service volunteers, serve with MDA, including approximately 16,500 youth volunteers. In addition, approximately 18,000 Life Guardians operate within MDA. MDA volunteers contributed more than 6.3 million hours of volunteer service. The average age of an MDA volunteer is 26.8. The oldest volunteer is a 92-year-old resident of Ness Ziona, while the youngest MDA volunteer is 14 years old.
Magen David Adom operates 213 stations and dispatch points throughout the country.

Thousands of MICUs, ambulances, MDA medicycles and specialized vehicles operate nationwide. These include 275 rapid response vehicles, 50 of them electric; 117 MDA ambulances and MICUs equipped with four-wheel drive (4x4); 17 all-terrain vehicles; 27 MCI vehicles (Mass Casualty Incident stations); 42 trailers equipped with supplies for treating mass-casualty incidents; 17 Medical Supervisor vehicles; three Unimog vehicles; and five intensive care buses. There are also 10 ambulances equipped with lifts for people with disabilities, eight ambulances with specialized stretchers for bariatric patients, and three MICUs capable of treating two critically ill patients simultaneously. A total of 104 ambulances, MICUs and command vehicles are bulletproof. MDA also operates three electric MiaFour vehicles, two electric vehicles for sports facilities, a truck equipped for staff accommodation and overnight stays, two mobile dispatch points on trailers, and a mobile clinic trailer.

MDA operates 652 motorcycles, including 116 heavy motorcycles. On the Sea of Galilee, MDA operates an intensive care sea ambulance vessel, while an MDA sea ambulance boat also operates off the coast of Eilat. Together, they were dispatched to provide medical care at 153 incidents. MDA's unique ECMO mobile unit, operated in cooperation with Shamir Medical Center, provided medical treatment to nine patients, five of whom were connected to a heart-lung machine as part of resuscitation efforts in the field.

During 5786, MDA emergency vehicles were dispatched 1,911,412 times, meaning that, on average, an MDA team was dispatched every 16.5 seconds. In road traffic accidents throughout the country, MDA EMTs and paramedics provided medical treatment to 67,624 injured people. During the bathing season, which began after Passover and will end after Sukkot, MDA EMTs and paramedics have so far provided medical treatment to 229 adults and children who were rescued from the sea, swimming pools and other bodies of water after drowning incidents.

Approximately 500,000 men and women took CPR and first aid courses in more than 17,000 courses held throughout the country over the past year. Thousands received training through free first aid and emergency building wardens courses conducted by MDA in shelters and protected spaces as part of the organization's public service during the Iron Swords War and Operations "Rising Lion" and "Roaring Lion." MDA's Medical Division certified 401 new paramedics this year, including 117 National Service volunteers. A total of 970 MDA youth volunteers were trained to respond to mass-casualty incidents, 591 youth volunteers were certified as first aid instructors, and 190 youth volunteers completed youth leadership and resilience training.

As part of the lessons learned from October 7, 2023, MDA's Operations Division established the Magen Project, an initiative designed to prepare the civilian population for emergencies. Since the project's launch, 17,804 civilians, including members of local security response teams, municipal employees, inspectors and others, have been trained to provide initial medical care. Of these, 1,322 were trained this year. All project participants, including more than 1,000 doctors and paramedics, were equipped by MDA with medical equipment and will be able to provide an initial response when needed, including in situations where a community is cut off from access routes due to a natural disaster, war, terrorist infiltration or other emergency.

A total of 18,727 pregnant women were evacuated to hospitals, of whom 1,399 gave birth with the assistance of MDA teams at home or en route to the hospital. Magen David Adom operates a project for on-call midwives, through which professional midwives are equipped by MDA with advanced and specialized medical equipment and dispatched alongside MICUs to assist women in labor. This year, 97 midwives from throughout the country joined the project and helped provide medical care together with MDA teams in dozens of obstetric emergencies.

This year, MDA Blood Services teams collected 281,917 blood units in thousands of blood drives held at public locations throughout the country, MDA station donation rooms, schools, workplaces and various IDF bases. During 5786, 36.1% of blood donors were women and 63.9% were men. The average age of a blood donor was 34. Of the hundreds of thousands of people who donated blood this year, 46,407 were first-time donors. A total of 9,541 of the blood units supplied by MDA Blood Services to the security forces and hospitals were whole blood units.

MDA Blood Services operates 24 blood service team vehicles and 14 blood donation vehicles, including two blood donation buses, each of which can collect blood from five donors simultaneously. All blood donations were tested for blood type and infectious diseases at MDA Blood Services laboratories in the protected building at MDA's headquarters in Ramla, the first facility of its kind in the world. The blood units were supplied to hospitals throughout the country and to the IDF.

MDA's National Human Milk Bank supplied approximately 5,700 liters of breast milk over the past year to premature babies in neonatal intensive care units, newborns in hospitals and sick infants at home who require breast milk due to their medical condition. In special cases, an average of approximately 40 liters of milk per month was supplied to orphans whose mothers had begun breastfeeding or wished to breastfeed but died following childbirth. Over the past year, approximately 370 new milk donors joined the bank, meeting the most stringent medical standards to ensure the safest possible breast milk for premature babies.

Magen David Adom's Logistics Division ensured all the organization's medical and operational needs in the field throughout the year. A total of 2,443 immediate response kits were prepared throughout the year by staff and volunteers of the division and distributed to MDA EMTs, paramedics and physicians, enabling them to save lives even outside their regular working and volunteer hours. A total of 128 wishes were fulfilled thanks to MDA's Wish Ambulance. Magen David Adom, in cooperation with Hatzolah Air and Brook Aviation, operates five helicopters equipped with advanced intensive care equipment. These teams treated and airlifted 264 patients and injured people to hospitals throughout the country.

MDA operates a unique national command-and-control truck equipped with the most advanced technologies, as well as three regional command and communications vehicles. MDA teams participated in 485 drills this year, during which 836 ambulances, 229 MICUs, medicycles, MCI vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, Unimog vehicles, command-and-control units, Medical Supervisor vehicles, rapid response vehicles, intensive care buses, MDA helicopters and other assets were deployed.

A total of 2,020,218 calls were received by MDA's 101 Emergency Call Center over the past year. On average, an MDA 101 call was received every 15.9 seconds, while the average phone response time for a 101 call was two seconds or less. During 5786, MDA placed 128 public-access automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in 45 communities throughout the country. Since the launch of the project to place AEDs in public spaces, MDA has installed 2,036 life-saving devices in hundreds of communities. In addition, MDA has installed more than 600 devices in synagogues in Jerusalem and other cities.
