Invited to the celebration 4 months later

Last March MDA Paramedic Ofir Peretz and EMT Yiftah Hershtig were called to a woman in advanced labor. The baby was delivered moments before they arrived with guidance from MDA's 101 Dispatch Center, but on arrival they found that the newborn had lost consciousness and began resuscitation efforts.

The baby was born three months prematurely, and as the MDA team were carrying out resuscitation attempts, the father, Rabbi R. Cohen asked whether the baby would survive, and Ofir promised him that they would be invited to the baby's Brit (circumcision) ceremony. After a long time spent resuscitating the baby, and the father's prayers, the MDA team got the baby's pulse back and started to convey him to Soroka Hospital.

The baby, accompanied by his parents, spent a few days in intensive care, and once stable moved to the neonatal unit. Three and half months later, they were discharged home. While making arrangements for the Brit for baby Avishai, they decided to invite the MDA team who saved his life. The parents and MDA team met for the first time since Avishai's birth at the ceremony.

Rabbi Cohen told of the event: "The team arrived within minutes of my call to MDA, with Ofir and Yiftah fighting for Avishai's life. I remembered my conversation with Ofir, and it was important for me to invite them. I sent them the invitation with a neighbor who volunteers for MDA but I wasn't sure they'd arrive. When they walked in I was excited to see them. God sent me these messengers four months ago, and today I merited to show them my appreciation."

"I had no idea what we were going to on that night," said paramedic Ofir. "We knew it was a premature birth, and we were determined to save the baby's life. We had to perform CPR moments after the baby was born and we fought to save his life and get his pulse back. I promised the father that he'd invite us to the Brit - and we were indeed very excited to receive that invitation, arrive at the ceremony and meet Avishai face to face, fit and healthy."
