Operation Wine and Honey
Thousands of MDA volunteers are collecting food for the needy in the leadup to Rosh Hashana
For the next few weeks as we lead up to the New Year, you'll find thousands of MDA volunteers, mainly the youth volunteers, standing outside supermarkets collecting food and drink for families in need, in what is known as "Operation Wine and Honey".
The operation will continue until 23rd of September, and behind the scenes the food that is donated is being packed into hundreds of boxes to be delivered to those most in need. Items that are suggested for donation include honey, wine, grape juice, canned foods, oil, sugar, spreads, cakes, coffee, soft drinks and more.
MDA Director General Eli Bin: "We are putting in a large effort in order to provide a full festive meal to those families in need. MDA is an organization whose activities cross Israeli society and is interwoven within it, and we are happy to help with any activity that helps local communities. Our connection with the community is of vital importance - we are in constant contact with the welfare authorities across the country throughout the year and especially around the festivals. It's important for us to reach as many families as we can to try to help them. These are humanitarian missions of the highest order."
