Meet Dugo – the man and the Falafel!

When Dugo (David) was 14 years old, he was sent on the death march in Auschwitz. It was January 18^th, 1945. As he walked for many miles in the snow, he was dreaming of only one thing – warm, round, tasty bread that he would eat when he reached the Land of Israel.

Dugo survived the horrors of the Holocaust, and eventually reached Israel. One of the places he visited was Machane Yehuda – the famous market in the center of Jerusalem. This is where he first saw falafel. The falafel balls reminded him of the dream he'd had years earlier as he marched through the forests and the death camps.

As he looked at the falafel, he decided there and then that he would eat one every year on January 18^th, to remember and celebrate his survival and victory over the Nazis.
