Flash Birth: Paramedic, best friend - and midwife

Tali Aflalo, 36, a resident of Nahariya, planned for her good friend Ravit Cohen to accompany her to give birth to her son in the hospital delivery room. On Monday about a week ago, Tali called urgently at 5 o'clock in the morning to Ravit and asked her to arrive to her house, due to labor pains. When Ravit, an MDA EMT, helped Tali get organized, instructed Yaron, Tali's husband, to take the bags they had prepared in advance, get in the car in order to drive to the hospital. But a moment later, when they were near the door of the house, the water broke and the birth began at home and within a few minutes Aviel was born as Ravit being a midwife and during all this time Yaron, Tali's husband, is waiting in the car and is unaware of the birth.

Regarding the dramatic event, Ravit said: "When I got to Tali, the gap between the contractions was still long, I explained to her that the safest place to give birth was in the delivery room and that we had to go to the hospital. When I laid her on the bed I saw the baby’s head crowning. I immediately called 101 MDA and delivered the baby together with the EMT on the phone, whilst the ambulance was on its way to us. "One of the children who was at home woke up and did not understand why he heard a baby crying, I told him to get out to the car quickly and tell Dad 'congratulations' and call him to come back home."

On the moments after, she added: "None of us realized the speed of birth. Nahariya is a small town and everyone lives a few minutes away from the hospital. I have been volunteering at MDA for five years, but I have not yet delivered a woman at home. It was stunning and I didn’t even have time to get excited or stressed. I concentrated on reassuring Tali and doing everything I learned in the EMT course in the most professional way. The baby is charming and cute, sleeps a lot and barely cries".

Regarding the flash birth, the new mother Tali said: "Until now it was difficult for me to understand what happened, everything was very fast and exciting. Yaron my husband was a little apprehensive about the birth in advance and the plan was that Ravit will accompany me in the delivery room. Now she is not only my best friend, she is also my personal midwife and I thank her for being there by my side and doing an amazing job."
