The Training Department of Magen David Adom

The Training Department of Magen David Adom trains approximately 90,000 people each year, including the general public, employees of factories, institutions, physicians and nurses, as well as employees and volunteers of Magen David Adom, at various levels.

The courses are taught at different levels, from basic level (CPR and first aid courses) to the most advanced level, including training of physicians, paramedics, nurses and emergency medictal technicians (ambulance drivers).

Trainees from the general public and professional practitioners of emergency medicine (physicians, dentists, nurses, paramedics and ambulance drivers) attend first aid, CPR courses and training sessions arranged by the Training Department of MDA. The maximum level of professional training is the qualifying training of paramedics (senior resuscitation experts). Since 1996, two paramedic courses are held each year. Each course qualifies up to 30 new paramedics. The course is conducted by an emergency medicine specialist physician. The Department also conducts internal courses and training sessions for MDA employees and also refresher training sessions designed to update the medical personnel in emergency medical innovations.

The Training Department delivers a wide range of courses, training sessions and workshops, ranging from a basic CPR course (4 hours), a basic first aid course (20 hours), a refresher training course for lifeguards (7 hours), a course for public transportation drivers (18 hours) and advanced courses designed for professional medical personnel.

MDA and the nursing school of Assaf HaRofe Hospital operate a unique paramedic qualifying program which includes studies for a bachelor's degree. A similar course of study also takes place in the School of Medicine in Beersheva University.

Since 1995, MDA has worked in collaboration with Tel Aviv University, under the guidelines of the American Heart Association (AHA), to arrange for MDA employees and other medical teams to study advanced emergency medicine – Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) on cardiac-related topics.

MDA, in collaboration with the American Paramedics Organization and under the guidelines of the American Surgical Association, has also arranged a course in Pre - Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS – advanced treatment of trauma) for MDA employees and other Emergency Medicine Technicians. Since 1997, MDA paramedics must take a course in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS – advanced treatment for children in emergency situations) and since 1998, they also have been taking courses in Geriatrics.

All courses are conducted in accordance with U.S. levels and standards. These advanced courses held by MDA are designed to provide medical personnel with advanced knowledge and skill in CPR, cardiac treatment, trauma treatment and treatment of children and injuries in various emergencies.

The National Training Department is located at the MDA headquarters in Tel Aviv.
